On a recent flight I got to try out Delta’s new free wifi for Skymiles members. For a few years Delta has talked about free wifi for everyone but the technology just hasn’t really existed to provide good free wifi. Anyone who’s been on a crowded flight and tried to use the wifi knows the bandwidth limitations can be frustrating.
Bottom Line: In the last few weeks of 2022, Delta announced that wifi would be free for Skymiles members on properly equiped aircraft. A few days ago I had the opportunity to check out Delta’s free wifi. All in, the Delta free wifi worked great. I wouldn’t say it’s blazing fast, but for light web use, I had zero issues with the Delta free wifi.
What Delta Planes Have Free Wifi
Right now, not every Delta flight features the new free WiFi. If you’re on a regional jet or wide body(Jan 2023) you won’t have free wifi on Delta. If you’re on a 737, A220, A320 series, or 757 there’s a opportunity for free wifi.
You can tell if your Delta flight will have free wifi when you book. On the Delta website, you can see the “fast wifi” logo on some flights. Those aircraft should have free wifi. However, airplane swaps happen and not all planes have the newest technology required for free wifi.

My Free Delta WiFi Experience
I connected to the Delta WiFi and then went to the sign in splash screen. It instructed me to copy the URL and paste it into my browser, so I did exactly that. This is the normal process for Delta paid WiFi.
I placed my phone into airplane mode, pasted the link into my browser and found this page. Delta free wifi is only available for Skymiles members so it’s best if you already have an account, though you’re able to create one from this screen.
I logged in using my Skymiles number and password.
Once I logged in it greeted me with my name and Skymiles status. Looks like everything worked perfectly. I was streaming some music at the time and it continued perfectly.
Delta Free WiFi Speed
I decided to run a quick speed test to see what sort of bandwidth is available on the Free Delta WiFi. 2.5Mbps isn’t amazing, but it’s more than enough to browse the web, stream some music, or even videos. During the whole flight I had zero disruptions.

I’m really glad that Delta is adding free WiFi to many of their domestic aircraft. The process to log in was easy, just use your Skymiles number and password.
The speeds I was getting were pretty decent, nothing amazing, but more than end bandwidth to stream or surf without delay. Delta has been talking about free wifi for years and I’m glad to see it’s actually happening.
