I’m heading to Chicago this week and I’ll be flying on and reviewing United Express on their ERJ175. United services the GSP-ORD route a few times per day and direct flights are always better than a connection. This route is served by the ERJ175, it’s an aircraft I really like and have ridden on many times. I reviewed this exact route back in 2021. While not much has changed I figured I would do another review for this trip. The United ERJ175 has 3 cabins. First class is arranged in a 1-2 seating configuration. Economy Plus is 2-2 seating but with extra leg room. Economy is 2-2 with regular leg room. I’ll be in economy on today’s trip.

This trip is a little odd for me, I’m traveling on a Friday and will be working over the weekend. I rarely do that, but there are a few times it happens. It’s been over a year since I’ve been to Chicago and I’m also glad to be getting back. Anyway, let’s get into this United ERJ175 review.

Date of flight: October 2022

GSP Airport

GSP Airport Airside Courtyard

I arrived at GSP about 45 minutes before my departure time. Because it’s a beautiful fall day, I decided to sit outside and relax for a few minutes in the outdoor airside garden.

GSP Airport A Concourse

It was soon boarding time so I headed to the gate. Here at GSP United uses gates in the A Concourse. Usually the ones all the way at the end, today we’re departing from A8.

United ERJ175 Economy Boarding

United ERJ175 Boarding Process

Untied boards by zones. Today I’m in zone 2, zone 2 is the 4 group to board. Yea, like pretty much all airlines, the boarding zones are are made up and the numbers don’t matter.

United ERJ175 Waiting at the gate

I like the United livery on the ERJ175.

United ERJ175 Economy Cabin

I boarded and made my way back to the economy section. The ERJ175 feels a lot bigger than the other regional jets, a true carry on bag will easily fit in the overhead bins too. The 2-2 seating arrangement is very comfortable with no middle seats.

United ERJ175 Economy Seat Review

United ERJ175 Economy Seat

I’m sitting on the right side window seat of the United ERJ175 on my flight to Chicago. I got pretty lucky and don’t have a seat mate today.

United ERJ175 Economy Seat leg Room

The leg room here in economy on the United ERJ175 is very good. Even with my computer bag stowed at my feet, I have plenty of room. But than again, I’m not super tall so I fit in most airline seats.

United ERJ175 Economy Cabin

We all got settled into our flight. It’s a mostly full flight but there are a few empty seats around the plane, including right next to me.

United ERJ175 Window View

As we pushed back from the gate, the flight attendants gave their safety briefing. We’re even a few minutes early on our departure time. The pilots added their welcome and told us we might have to wait just a few minutes before takeoff. It should be just under a 2 hour flight today to Chicago.

United ERJ175 Takeoff

United ERJ175 Take Off

After our taxi to the runway, we only had a short delay before we took off.

United ERJ175 Economy Take Off

Nice clear day here in South Carolina. We departed to the North East but made our turn to Chicago to the South instead of directly to the North East. Not sure why, but it happens with some regularity.

United ERJ175 In Flight

The ERJ175 is a nice aircraft for these flights. We have nice smooth air today so the seatbelt sign was soon turned off.

United ERJ175 Economy Drink Service

United ERJ175 Economy Drink Service

Ok, there we go, back to boring. United does a beverage service on flights of this length, I opted for plain water. Yes, I’m boring.

United ERJ175 Economy Cabin In Flight

Inside the cabin we got a little bit of roughness so the seatbelt sign was turned back on.

Outside it was a little cloudy as we continued over Kentucky. There’s no in-seat entertainment on these flights, but wifi is offered.

United ERJ175 Economy View over lake Michigan

It soon cleared as we approached the Southern tip of Lake Michigan. The seat belt sign was briefly turned off so I decided to make a quick run to the bathroom.

United ERJ175 Bathroom

United ERJ175 Economy Rear Bathroom

The rear bathroom on the United ERJ175 is adequate. It’s not huge, but is more than big enough, especially in comparison with what other planes have. For not a very large plane, I’m impressed.

United ERJ175 Economy Cabin In Flight

I headed back to my seat from the rear of the plane. All in, this has been a very pleasant flight.

United ERJ175 ORD Landing and Arrival

United ERJ175 Economy Over Chicago

We got a great view of Downtown Chicago on our arrival into ORD.

United ERJ175 Economy ORD Airport

On the ground here at ORD it looks like it will be a very nice day outside.

United ERJ175 Economy ORD Airport

Fortunately there was no delay in getting into our gate.

And into the ORD terminal.

United ERJ175 Economy Final Thoughts

The United ERJ175 is a great ride. I never mind when an ERJ175 is on my schedule. It’s just a very comfortable plane in any class. With the under wing engines it’s not loud in the rear like the CRJ900. It also has large enough overhead bins that will fit a legal size carry on bag.

Untied does a good job on outfitting these planes. There are 3 cabins on this plane, First, Economy Plus, and Economy. Today I was in economy and found the leg room more than adequate. The ERJ175 doesn’t have overwing exit rows so pretty much all of the economy seats are the same. I got lucky and didn’t have a seat mate so I had plenty of room.

At the end of the day, this was a perfect United ERJ175 economy flight. Everything was on time, the seat was comfortable, and the service was adequate on this short trip to Chicago.
