Do you need a generic hotel near Newark Airport? The SpringHill Suites Newark Airport kinda sucks but works.
We’re heading to Asia on Singapore Airlines A350 in Business Class, we’re departing from EWR in the morning so decided to fly up the day before. This is an un-protected connection, don’t want to take any chances. I needed a cheap hotel to crash at, all I wanted was clean and a free shuttle to the airport, the SpringHill Suites met those requirements. Airport hotels are a commodity, they’re almost completely interchangeable and unremarkable. I chose the SpringHill Newark because it was the cheapest mass market brand.
Bottom Line: If you want a hotel near Newark the SpringHill Suites is fine. The rooms are large, but older. They are at least clean and there’s a free shuttle to the airport. Solid Meh hotel.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Location
The SpringHill Newark is about a mile from the EWR airport tucked nicely between two expressways and the New Jersey Department of Transportation maintenance yard. Yea, you’re not staying here for fun, it’s out of necessity. A few things to note, there’s literally nothing in this area. No convenience stores, restaurants, or anywhere to get a bite to eat. If you’re staying here, have dinner before you arrive.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Check-In

We arrived via Uber and checked into the SpringHill. The Shuttle bus has a signup sheet, otherwise it’s first come first serve. So we got on the list for tomorrow morning.

There’s a little market area with snacks, this is pretty much you’re only option for food once you’re here. No restaurate or bar is onsite.

The lobby is pretty standard, nothing fancy. There is free breakfast served in this area, we didn’t partake, easier to grab something in the lounge once we’re at the airport.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport King Room

We got our keys and headed up-stairs. The rooms at the SpringHill Newark are older, but in good enough shape. They are also quite large with a small kitchenette separated from the bed area.

We opted for a single bed, it was clean and comfortable. Being an older hotel, there are no outlets on the night stands, you have to fish around behind the bed to find them.

Looking towards the window from the bed.

The rooms arrangement is a little odd, there’s a sofa, but it’s on the opposite side of the room from the bed and the same side of the room as the TV. You can’t sit here and watch. Didn’t matter for us, we just crashed before our flight.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Bathroom

We had apparently been assigned a handicap accessible room. This is most evident in the bathroom. This is also where the SpringHill starts to show it’s age, the bathroom is dated.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Kitchenette

The rooms here at the SpringHill Newark do have a little kitchenette with a small fridge, sink, and microwave. We didn’t really need it, but I guess it would be nice as there’s no food options out here.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Room View

Looking out the window there’s another airport hotel, the airport, and a freeway. Like I said, not a super great area for anything but sleeping before a flight from Newark.
SpringHill Suites Newark Airport Final Thoughts
This SpringHill Suites has one purpose, people who need to sleep before an early flight from Newark. It does the job and absolutely nothing more. It’s an older hotel stuck between two freeways. You cannot walk here and there are no restaurants. But you know what, this hotel is perfectly fine. There’s a free breakfast in the morning and a shuttle to the Newark Airport.
There are at least a dozen hotels that serve this same need, they are a commodity. I’d stay here at the SpringHill again, but only if it was the cheapest. Again, nothing special, but it was clean and quite, good enough for me.
