The MGM Grand is one of the largest hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. While out here for work I stayed in two different rooms at the MGM, not by choice, just what was available when I booked this trip piecemeal. This review is for the Grand Tower Rooms. I also have a review for the Studio Tower Rooms if you want to check it out. I mostly chose the MGM due to it being on the Las Vegas monorail. That makes it easy for me to get to and from the convention center where I’m working.
Bottom Line: The MGM Grand Tower Rooms are large and clean, but are a little bit on the older side. I did like these rooms better than The MGM Studio King Rooms(Review Here), but there is a higher cost. The MGM is a giant property, almost too big, and is a great location for exploring the Las Vegas Strip. However, I think on future trips I would look at the Park MGM Hotel before the MGM Grand.
MGM Grand Location
The MGM Grand is located on Las Vegas Blvd at the intersection with Tropicana Ave. This is right in the center of all of the Las Vegas Strip action. Staying here, we were within walking distance of several other casinos, great restaurants, and some fun bars. My personal favorite was the Beer Park, a rooftop bar at the Paris Hotel(Google Maps Link). About a 10 minute walk away and a great place to watch the Bellagio Fountains. Down the street you’ll also find an ABC store and CVS for supplies.
MGM Grand Check-in

We arrived at the MGM via Taxi from the airport. Site note: Uber from LAS is a huge waste of time/money. Just walk to the taxi stand the Airport to MGM is $22. The prices are fixed rate to/from the airport(NV Government Taxi Website). It’s way faster and easier than Uber.
Check-in was fast and easy. We were given our room keys and directed towards the elevators that are just a few steps into the casino and to the right.
MGM Grand Tower Queen Room Review

As tends to happen in Las Vegas, we ended up in a two queen room even after reserving a king. I found the decor of the room a little dated, but still in good repair.

The bed was clean and comfortable. I especially liked the pillows. As you can see, the room is covered in mirrors, seemed to be popular in the early 2000s when this was last updated.

I’m really not sure why, but I always end up sleeping in the bed furthest from the windows. Just one of those hotel quirks I have after a few thousand nights. While there are power outlets on the center night stand, the outside doesn’t on both beds. This bed does have power, but there’s no table on that side. The other bed doesn’t have power or a table on both sides of the bed.

Near to the window there are a pair of sitting chairs and table. For us, this is mostly just a luggage rack and a place to put on shoes.

On the same side of the room, there’s a desk. This was used on this trip, I’m here for work.

Across from the beds, and next to the desk, is a TV stand that includes the mini bar and a chest of drawers.
MGM Grand Tower Bathroom

The bathroom here at the Grand Tower is another area that is showing some age. It’s just a little bit dated in its style. I will say it was well maintained and acceptably clean. Unlike a lot of hotels, the MGM is still doing individual sized toiletries.

I’m not a huge fan of the shower/tub combo. Especially ones that have a shower curtain.
MGM Grand Tower Room View

Our room was facing the North. In the background you can see the sphere, the brand new color changing concert venue. Most rooms in Vegas are like this, you kinda expect glamour, but then realize it’s just another hotel room.
MGM Grand Casino Floor

I’ll level with you. I’m not much of a gambler, so to me, pretty much all casino floors look the same to me. Once you figure out the maze, it’s really just a path to get out of the hotel. MGM does allow smoking on the casino floor so you’ll smell it throughout the whole building. The rooms are fine, but all of the public areas will have a smoke smell.

The casino floor has lots of slots with their large video boards. There are also plenty of table games, but those don’t seem to be nearly as prevalent or popular as the video slots.
MGM Grand Dining

There’s lots of food options here at the MGM Grand. For some low cost options there’s a food court. There are also 3 Starbucks inside the hotel.

There’s a selection of more fast casual type type restaurants. They tend to be kinda scattered around the hotel property. They are mostly walk in type restaurants but are somewhat crowded. I do think some of the other hotels do a better job in this area. Specifically the Park MGM and the New York that are close by.

Then there are the full service restaurants that are available at the MGM. These tend to be somewhat busy and often require a reservation. These are commonly the celebrity chef restaurants like Emeril’s.
Las Vegas Monorail at MGM

The main reason I chose the MGM was because it’s on the Monorail. I’m going to the convention center every day so commuting on the monorail is the easiest way. I don’t think the Monorail is great public transportation, but for getting from the MGM to the Las Vegas Convention Center, it’s perfect.
I have a full review of the Las Vegas Monorail if you want to check it out.
Other MGM Grand Features
We stayed at 2 different rooms here at the MGM, first was this one, the Grand Tower. The second was the Studio Tower(Full Review). If you’d like to see some of the other features of the MGM like Pool, you can check out the other review.
MGM Grand Tower Final Thoughts
I liked the MGM Grand Tower, but the rest of the MGM just isn’t that great. It’s a huge property with a lot of features but just not my cup of tea. I did like the Grand Tower room more than the Studio tower and would certainly chose the Grand Tower over the Studio.
The best part of the MGM, for me, is the location. Staying here we were right in the middle of the strip and able to walk or ride the monorail to everything we wanted to do. We also really enjoyed the pool area and relaxing in the sun when I wasn’t working.
I’ve stayed here before, and I’ll probably stay here again, but I’d certainly consider other hotels in the area. Specifically the Park MGM, seems like that might be more my speed.
