Moxy hotels are an interesting brand, one that I’ve used a good amount. I’ve reviewed a few different Moxy hotels and I’ve stayed at even more. I like the brand as they usually have good prices and are not that fancy. They have the features I want and nothing more. Val and I are going on our annual Thanksgiving trip to Scandinavia, but we’re departing to Europe from New York. I booked the Moxy NYC Downtown for the overnight before our Trans-Atlantic flight.

Bottom Line: We had a nice time at the Moxy NYC Downtown, the room was trendy and clean, but definitely NYC sized. We liked the hotel bar and the quiet street that the hotel was on. But this is basically wall street so it’s a different feel. Anyway, let’s get into the full review.

Moxy NYC Downtown Hotel Location

The NYC Moxy Downtown, as the name would imply, is on the southern end of Manhattan. This is about 6 blocks from Wall Street. So not the usual neighborhood you’d make a base for visiting NYC as a tourist, but it’s not terrible. You’ll just spend a few extra minutes on the train getting around town.

Right around the corner there is a Joe’s Pizza so at the end of the night you can always tie on a slice.

Usually I wouldn’t book a hotel this far south on Manhattan, Downtown New York is not so much a neighborhood as it is the primary business district. Due to it being Thanksgiving, the hotel prices in New York were pretty crazy, even the Moxy Downtown was more than I was expecting.

Moxy NYC Downtown Exterior

The Downtown Moxy is on a nice quiet street. The exterior is very on brand, bright and trendy.

Moxy NYC Downtown Queen Bedroom Review

We were given a high floor room here at the Downtown Moxy. We walked in and this is pretty much exactly what I was expecting. A nice small room. On the left is the bathroom, forward has the bed, the wall on the right has the TV, a fold out desk, and a wall of hooks.

The bed was comfortable but I wasn’t a huge fan of the pillows. On both sides of the bed were outlets to charge devices, but only one side has a night stand. So someone will just need to put a phone on the floor.

Across from the bed was the TV. Below that is a fold out desk. It’s very small, but could be usable for a little work if needed.

Next to the bed was this hanging chair. It’s a little silly to put something like this in such a small hotel room. I’d rather it just get left-out and add a second night stand or even a small desk.

Along the wall is are about 30 hooks. This is one of those Moxy hotel features that I really like. In a small room, you need a place to store stuff, hooks are perfect. We hung our backpacks, coats, towels, scarves, hats, and some clothes.

Another feature the Moxy NYC Downtown had was central lighting controls along with power blinds for the window shade.

Moxy NYC Downtown Bathroom Reivew

The Moxy NYC Bathroom wasn’t large, but was very adequate. It was perfectly clean and pleasant. I like the halo mirrors better than just overhead lighting.

The shower was a nice stand up shower with glass doors. The space was quiet good, especially for NYC. A quick note is that the toiletries are large shared types, no individual single use soaps.

Ok, here’s where the “trendy” really shows at the Moxy, there’s a window into the bathroom. So yea, the person in the bed area can see right into the shower. The painting can slide to cover this porthole, so that’s nice, but it’s just something to keep in mind.

Moxy NYC Downtown Room View

The view from the Hotel was great. Overlooking Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge was very cool.

Moxy NYC Downtown Cocktail Bar

The Moxy NYC has a pretty nice bar located on the 3rd floor. As I have Marriott Status they have us 2 free drinks per night.

I’m not a huge fan of hotel bars, but it’s not a bad place to kill a half hour after dinner with a free drink.

Moxy NYC Downtown Final Thoughts

The Moxy NYC Downtown is a good hotel. The room was a good size for NYC, more than enough for two people with small suitcases. The wall of hooks makes the space very usable. The lack of a desk really saves some floor area. I liked the bathroom and the shower, much better than a tub.

The view from the room was very cool, especially at night with the bridges illuminated. The bar was a good spot to relax after dinner, even if I’m not a huge fan of hotel bars. It seemed like a pretty lively spot. The hotel was easy to get to on the train and the nice quite street was easy to walk.

I generally like the Moxy brand, in fact I’ve stayed at all of the Moxy hotels on Manhattan. If I had to make a recommendation, I would pick the East Village Moxy as my favorite, but this one is good too. I just would rather stay in the East Village instead of Downtown. I would totally say here at the NYC Downtown Moxy again, but only if it was cheaper.
