The McNamara terminal in Detroit is one of the best airports in the US and world. It’s full of features including a full service Westin Hotel that’s within the terminal. I’ve stayed here in the past but this is the first time I’ve had a chance to do a full hotel review of the Detroit Airport Westin.
Staying here wasn’t planned, we are on our way to Albany NY and our flight was diverted due to weather. So while getting diverted sucks, I do like the DTW Westin. It’s not cheap, especially last minute, but the location and convenience cannot be beat. When reviewing the Detroit Airport Westin, I’ll admit I was not in a great mood due to the flight diversion, but the hotel was excellent.
Detroit Airport Westin Location

The DTW Westin is literally in the McNamara Terminal. It’s directly across from gate A36. It has it’s own security checkpoint so getting into and out of the hotel lobby is easy.

Just keep an eye on the clock, it’s not open 24 hours like the regular check point.

You can also access the DTW Westin from the main check in area at McNamara terminal. If facing the check in desks, walk all the way to the left and you can find the hotel entrance.
DTW Westin Lobby and Check-in

We found our way to the lobby on the first floor. It was late and there’s only one person working the check-in desk. But we were soon checked in and had room keys.

The Westin lobby is a huge space with an atrium surrounded by rooms. It’s a very nice space with lots of different sitting areas.

This is a well decorated hotel, it follows the same style as the rest of the airport, it’s very large and open. At first I was a little worried it would be noisy, but that was unfounded.
DTW Westin King Room Review

We walked into our King room here at the DTW Westin. Pretty standard stuff in the room but everything was very clean and in great condition. I was wondering about that, the hotel is about 20 years old but they’ve done a great job of keeping the Westin well updated.

The bed was very comfortable and had lots of outlets on each side of the bed. There were also induvial reading lights and an alarm clock.

Across from the bed was a desk and TV stand combination. Didn’t really use either of them.

Within the desk was also a small fridge. We put our water bottles in here so we could have some nice cool drinks in the morning.

Included were some glasses, ice bucket, and even a church key and bottle opener. Nice little touches.
DTW Westin Bathroom Review

The bathroom at the Westin was great. Large, clean, and modern.

The shower was a tub situation and not a stall shower, and that’s not my favorite, but it was perfectly serviceable.
DTW Westin Room View

Ok, the view sucks from our room. There are some rooms here with a great view of the airfield, but our is not one of those rooms. We have a great view of some service areas…
DTW Airport Westin Hotel Final Thoughts
This is a great hotel. If you find yourself stuck in the Detroit airport overnight, there’s no better place to crash. The Detroit Westin is clean, quite, and super convenient. I honestly wish we could have stayed a little longer. We had a 7AM replacement flight and I would have enjoyed sleeping in a little longer.
The good news is that because the Westin is in the airport we could wake up only a few minutes before departure and then breeze through security. The Westin is a little expensive for what you receive, but they know the market, stranded passengers who need a place close and comfortable. At least they don’t skimp on the quality. We were lucky that our trip insurance reimbursed the cost for the night, but if not, I would have been a little hesitant.
I’d be glad to stay at the Detroit Westin again, but hopefully not because of another flight diversion.
