Delta Air Lines loves the 767, both the 767-300 and 767-400. Delta has 41 of the -300 flying right now and 21 of the -400 flying. The 767 is mostly used on medium haul flights to Europe and trans-con flights within the US. The Delta 767-300 seats ~215 people and the 767-400 seats ~240 people. The 767-300 is the most common wide body in the Delta fleet.

Here’s where things get a little weird. Depending on the route, the Delta 767 Business Class cabin is either sold as “Delta One” or “First Class.” Delta brands its international and premium route business class as Delta One. So this is pretty much everything outside of the US and then some routes like LAX-JFK or ATL-HNL. On shorter routes within the US, Delta brands this same cabin as First Class. There are some service differences but the seats are the exact same.

The Delta 767-300 is getting a little worn and is in the process of a re-fit, this is a good thing. The Delta 767-400 just finished a retrofit process and because of this the 767-400 is much nicer up front. The good news is that both of these planes have direct aisle access from every Delta One Seat.

I’ve been fortunate enough to ride on and review both the Delta 767-300 and 767-400 in First Class and Delta One several times. Here are my opinions in a head to head comparison:

Delta 767 Business Class Seats and Legroom

Delta 767-400 Business Class Seat

The 764 Delta One seat is great. It’s extremely private, even though it doesn’t have a door like the A330-900 or A350-900. It’s full of features like a reading light, power outlets, and a few storage cubbies.

Because these are lie-flat seats, while upright, the legroom is pretty much unlimited. The foot box could be considered a little small by people who have shoes on, but it’s not what I would consider tiny.

Delta 767-300 Business Class Seat

The Delta 763seat is nowhere near as nice as the 764 It’s an older design that feels much more open. It does still included power and a lamp, however the storage is much more limited than on the -400.

Legroom is great though. This picture is from Row 1 on the 767-300. These have a slightly larger footwell than the rest of the plane.

Delta One 767 Service

When it comes to service, both of these planes should be the same. They often operate similar routes and they should offer the same service so the main difference here will be between “First Class” and “Delta One.”

Delta 767 First Class Meal Service

On shorter flights on either Delta 767 marketed as First Class, the standard first class meal will be served.

Here’s a meal I was served on a Delta 767-300 between Atlanta and Seattle. Not too bad. It’s just a sandwich, chips, cookies, and a drink. In my book that’s a meal.

Delta 767 Delta One Meal Service

Delta One is the more premium service. There are several hot options provided along with better wines and drinks.

Here’s a Delta One dinner that I had on a recent 767-400 flight between Detroit and London. For a plane meal, it was very good. I especially liked the beef short ribs and the desert.

Because Delta One flights are usually longer legs, they likely come with a second meal. In this case Breakfast before landing.

Delta One 767 Entertainment

Delta 767-300 In Seat Entertainment

While large, on the Delta 767-300 in seat screen isn’t great. It’s an older resistive style screen and isn’t as easy to control as a more modern screen.

There is an included remote under the arm rest. I’d recommend using it if you’re having issues with the touch screens. The selection of TV shows and movies is very good so that’s always welcome.

Delta 767-400 In Seat Entertainment

The in-seat entertainment screens on the Delta 764 are the best I’ve ever used. Huge capacitive touch screens. Seriously the quality on these is just great. The interface just works too. A remote is included under the armrest too.

The selection is also great, though I’m not sure it’s larger than on the -300, but there’s more than enough to keep me entertained for several flights.

Delta One 767 Amenities

Delta 767-300 Amenities

The Delta 767-300 is starting to age. The lie flat seats are still comfortable but they have a few little interesting features that don’t seem to have made it to the newer planes. For one, the seats have a message feature. I don’t really like it, but it does exist.

There is of course power and a reading light. But also the headphone jack is a 2 prong, so bring an adapter or use the provided Delta headphones.

Delta 767-400 Amenities

The Delta 767-400 has a brand new seat with brand new controls. These controls have lots of little features like controlling the overhead light, the feature light in the suite, and then a do not disturb option.

The feature light in the Delta 767-400 suite. There’s also a nice little storage area for small items like phones or reading materials.

Delta 767 Business Class Comfort

Delta 767-300 Business Class Comfort

The Delta 767-300 is getting old, but I wouldn’t call it uncomfortable just a little outdated in comparison with the 767-400. It’s still a lie flat seat with every seat having aisle access. For a little more privacy, on the Delta 763, an odd number window seat will be a little farther from the aisle and is a little better in my opinion.

Taller people or those with large feet may like row 1 on the 767-300. I personally don’t really like the bulkhead due to the traffic volume, but I can understand the appeal, and I’m not very tall.

The good news is that Delta is in the process of refreshing the 767-300 with new seats. They won’t be a complete gut and re-fit, but it will be nice to have a new clean cabin.

Delta 767-400 Business Class Comfort

On the other hand, the Delta 767-400 is fresh out of a refit. The new Delta One cabin is awesome. The seats are very private and feel larger than the 767-400. Just to be different, on the 764, choosing an even numbered window seat will be a little more private and closer to the windows away from the aisle. The seats closer to the aisle do have more storage, but that’s the trade off.

How to Tell Difference between a 767-400 and 767-300

As a plane geek, I like to spot different aircraft. Both 767s have a few similarities. On the main landing gear, both 767s have 4 wheels. The 767s all have the same face and tail too. The 764 is 21ft longer than the 763, but that can be hard to judge if the two are not right next to each other.

So other than length, what’s the easiest way to tell the 767s apart? Look at the wingtips.

The 767-300 has blended winglets where the 767-400 has raked wingtips.

From inside the cabin, here’s what the wing looks like on the Delta 767-400. At the end of the wing you can see the rearward raked wingtip. This helps with fuel economy over the longer flights that the 764 runs. But it also makes the plane wider so it needs to use larger gates.

Here is a Delta 767-300 wing on departure from Seattle. You can see the upturned winglet on the 763 wing. This winglet also saves fuel, but doesn’t make the airplane as wide. It’s not as efficient as the 764, but it can use the smaller gates.

Delta 767 Business Class Final Thoughts

I really love riding on widebody planes and the 767 is a real work horse of the Delta fleet. But the 767-400 is just a much nicer place to be than the 767-300. I’ve got a lot more miles in a 763 than 764, so I have a soft spot for them. I’m looking forward to riding in one of the refreshed cabins on the Delta 767-300.

I would never take a lot of effort or spend more money to avoid the 767-300 and I would be grateful for it’s lie flat seats. However I would spend a little more effort to ride on the 767-400. The cabin just looks killer with it’s mood lighting and the high walls around the seats. The 767-400 also has killer in seat entertainment, it really is the best I’ve ever used.

At the end of the day, both are good planes, but the 767-400 is a better ride.
